Eastern Europe has the Bible to thank for its alphabet
"(The new alphabet devised in the middle of the ninth century by Methodius and Cyril for their work in translating the Scriptures into Slavonic, at that time the only native tongue spoken in the region of eastern Europe), known as the Cyrillic alphabet and having thirty-six letters, is still used in the Russian, Ukrainian, Serbo-Croatian, and Bulgarian languages." - A General Introduction to the Bible (1986) by Norman L. Geisler and William E. Nix, Chapter 28: Translations Containing Both the Old and New Testament Texts, Slavonic Version, pages 521-522.
